TenCate Advanced Armour presented its new NATO STANAG 4569 AEP 55 VOL. 1 Level 5 add-on armour solution at this year's Eurosatory. The exhibition piece drew attention from many visitors spanning the full spectrum of the defence industry.
The show piece had special relevance to the many visitors working in military land systems. Lv. 5 composite add-on armour is increasingly seen as the technology that separates high quality providers from the rest of the industry, as it requires extensive experience in composite materials to develop a survivability solution that can perform against the threats included in the STANAG lv. 5 testing procedure. However, due to the weight of composite materials in comparison with legacy metallic solutions, the composite lv. 5 solutions provide a much higher protection-to-weight ratio. This means more agile and mobile vehicles with much higher payload.
TenCate Advanced Armour's new lv. 5 solutions differentiates itself from all earlier marketed composite lv. 5 solutions as it is in compliance with NATO STANAG lv. 5 and lv. 4. What this means is that it is tested and certified to accommodate threats all the way down through the STANAG's testing protocol. The new technology that lies behind the new lv. 5 solution can also be developed to be in compliance with NATO STANAG 4569 AEP 55 VOL. 1 Level 6, although the final certification of this solution still has to be completed.
The new lv. 5 solution is one of the first tangible products to come out of TenCate Advanced Armour's new TenCate Technical Center (TTC). TenCate Advanced Armor USA recently showcased a ballistic floor kit for lightweight helicopter platforms at the Quad-A exposition in Nashville, TN., to shed light on TenCate Advanced Armor's capabilities in lightweight armor and aerospace survivability equipment (ASE). The addition of a ballistic floor kit to a lightweight helicopter platform can increase its capability to serve in military, para-military, and law enforcement applications.
The ballistic floor adds a ballistic barrier to the cockpit and cargo bay area greatly enhancing survivability among crew and passengers in case of an attack from the ground. Using lightweight ballistic panels, the stress on the airframe is delimited and the maneuverability of the platform is retained. This means that operators still operate a light and agile platform despite it being up-armored. Small helicopter platforms are in service with numerous services of the US government and serve in operations where attacks from the ground can pose a serious risk to crews and materiel.

TenCate Advanced Armour France has recently undergone an internal improvement process to increase safety for all employees working in our Primarette facility in France. Although no major accidents or incidents have occurred at the site, the emphasis has been on pro-actively preventing potential risk to our employees. Besides the risk of work accidents, TenCate Advanced Armour France has also developed a number of plans to manage severe incidents such as explosions, medical incidents, and key equipment failure under a combined Incident and Emergency Response Plan.
The primary emphasis on worker safety is a product of TenCate Advanced Armour’s reliance on a skilled and reliable work force. The dedicated workforce being our key resource were already working in a safe environment but with more focus we are focused on obtaining zero accidents in a very active manufacturing plant.
The most tangible evidence of the new policy is that it is now mandatory to wear foot and eye protection for anyone entering into the manufacturing area. Making a step change in safety focus foot and eye protection equipment are also mandatory for all personnel and visitors and accessible to all.
Before the new guidelines were released, TenCate Advanced Armour France scored 74 out of possible 88 possible points in an audit executed by FM Global Risk Assurance our risk management partners. After the new guidelines were released TenCate Advanced Armour France now receives 85 out of 88 possible points compared to the industry average which is 62 points. TCAA France was awarded the FM Global HPR (Highly Protected Risk) in 2013 and have continued to ensure we out-perform industry standards, this ensures we are a zero-risk supplier to our customer base.
